Genetically modified agricultural crops and food ingredients containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been safely used in the human food supply for more than 20 years. The regulatory agencies and various scientific bodies that study the safety of our food supply have determined that GMO crops and ingredients are as safe as their non-GMO counterparts. Nevertheless, we at Roland Foods recognize that some of our customers have questions about food products containing GMOs. We have worked diligently with our suppliers to determine which of our products currently contain GMO ingredients. That list1can be found here:
On July 29, 2016, President Obama signed a federal GMO law, which applies to retail food products sold nationally and which immediately pre-empts all state and local laws (including Vermont’s law) governing the labeling of genetically-engineered foods. The new federal law requires disclosure of GMO ingredients, but it gives manufacturers some flexibility in how they choose to label their GMO-containing products. We await further and final guidance from the U.S.D.A. on what compliant GMO disclosures should look like and how long we and other manufacturers have to comply with the law.
Ultimately, it is our goal to address customer concerns regarding GMOs and to comply with our legal obligations regarding the sale and labeling of products containing GMOs. We will issue an update as soon as we have implemented our disclosure requirements in accordance with the new federal law.
